Yarn Weights Worsted

yarn weights worsted
Worsted weight versus Medium weight yarn?

Is there a difference? To the eye medium weight yarn looks a little heavier than worsted weight, but the way “worsted” was explained to me was that it was in between heavy and fine. So, if that is what worsted means, wouldn’t that also mean medium? Just a little confused on yarn weights!!

Worsted is Medium. What it’s called depends on the company who makes it.

If you use the Bernat yarn switcher, http://www.bernat.com/product.php?YARN_SUB=1

and search for “worsted” under yarn type. They’ll give you the list of yarns that fit under the category of worsted, but when you look at the details of each individual yarn, they give it a “medium” rating and a #4.

The confusion, I believe, is because worsted weight yarn can be made with soft acrylics, natural wool, alpaca, cotton or cheap scratchy stuff you wouldn’t want to do anything with. Because it’s so vast, you never know what the pattern is really calling for.

Just always make a swatch and check your gauge.
