Unique Art Jewelry Using Textile Techniques
Sarah Keay’s new book, Design and Make Jewellery Using Textile Techniques from The United Kingdom is a most intriguing book. Design and Make Jewellery Using Textile Techniques by Sarah Keay won’t disappoint you.
The first unusual feature of Ms. Keay’s book is the introduction where she supplies a rare text on the history of the crossover between jewelry and textile techniques. The book then proceeds with a part on the beginning of contemporary jewelry using textile techniques. Delicious. This part also includes blurbs on the foremost textile jewelers today including, among others, Mary Lee Hu, Arlene Fisch and Flora Book. For those focused on jewelry textile techniques, this historical, contemporary information should be most interesting. You just won’t find this kind of information in most US how-to books.
The Materials section is three pages long and presents everything you’ll need to complete the diverse projects in this unusual book. Also, the author provides a lot of tips and warnings for your consideration before you begin any work.
The books’ first two projects are on both regular felting and a Japanese felting technique, Nuno felting, where loose fibers are bonded to sheer fabrics. Fascinating and gorgeous. Illustrations are quite well done and text instructions are quite clear. Crocheting a silk necklace follows along with an inspiring five page gallery section on crocheted jewelry.
The next section, Binding, is what we call wire wrapping in the States, and offers a wonderful and unique twist to the traditional technique. There’s an inspiring gallery page here as well. Two appealing projects on making a tiara and a French knit hollow bangle follow in the Knitting and French Knitting section of this bool. One of the best things about the sections above is the gallery photos and descriptions that you’ll find. You’ll see some very unique pieces of jewelry here like knitting encased in resin and turned into a bangle.
There’s also a rare section on how to manually weave jewelry on a loom. While the weave looks complex and quite interesting, the process is much easier than one would think. Those interested in art jewelry textile techniques might find this section the rare find that it is.
Rounding out this book, the final four techniques include sewing, lace making, hand spinning and smocking to make art jewelry. Make the effort to go to Myung Urso’s gallery in this section to see her sewn/sterling pieces.
Be sure to check out the hand spinning project in this section. This is where you’ll learn to spin old newspapers into “yarn” to make textile art jewelry. Truly wonderful. If you’re interested in going green, this project is most definitely for you.
A well conceived book, Design and Make Jewellery Using Textile Techniques, finishes with a delicious gallery section sure to inspire. I enjoyed the different layout of this book that includes pertinent gallery photos all through the book as well at the variety of materials offered in its projects.
