Man Made Fabrics

Now a days, we see many kinds of clothing but knew a very little about how they are made. Neither we see the importance of their use. Let’s see.

In 1938, a giant chemical chemical manufacturing company announced an exciting discovery-after 10 years of patent research and experiments had been able to make a new, silk like fiber, out of coal, air and water. It’s another name is nylon, which was looked on as a luxury. It was used in the place of silk, in such things for warm sweaters that can be washed in a washing machine instead of having to be washed carefully by hand. They are used to make blankets, suits, and carpets that will not be damaged by moths. They are used for ropes that lift great weights.

Polyester:  Polyester fibers are often mixed with cotton and wool.

Use: They are used in clothing to make it resistant to wrinkling. Such clothing is often smooth when it comes out of  a dryer after laundering, and it can be worn all day with little wrinkling. Polyester is also used in carpeting knitted fabrics, and filling for padded garments and sleeping bags.

Acrylic: fabric can be made very light and fluffy.

USE: used in soft, wooly products such as sweaters, blankets, carpets, socks and imitation fur coats.

Rayon: The most important regenerated cellulose fiber was one of the first  synthetic fibers to be developed. It was invented  as a low priced substitute for silk. Most Rayon produced today is of a type called viscose rayon.

USED: in women’s dresses and underwear and in some industrial uses where strength and low price are important. Most disposable bed sheets, towels and diapers contain a great deal of rayon.

Acetate: Another type of rayon. They have an advantage of not wrinkling as easily though they are not strong.

USED: in underwear, dresses and shirts, in home furnishings.

Spandex: spandex fibers are very elastic. They can be stretched over and over again and still return to their original length. They are used in stretch clothing such as bathing suits and girdles. Metallic fibers are often coated with a transparent plastic film. They are used for decorative purposes in table linens, laces and other items.

Wool: The coat covering of some animals like sheep. It was the first fiber and keeps it’s shape well. It may be fine and smooth or rough and coarse..

It is used to make surge, tweed & gabardine cloths & blankets. The covering of goats and other animals. Angora, Mohair & cashmere wools are made from coats of goats. The I lama Alpaca, relatives of the camel, have long fine coats which are used to make wool too.

Silk: A fine thread spun by a silk worm, the caterpillar of a moth. Silk worms and spiders that spin long, smooth filaments. The process looks simple , but people could not copy it fairly recently.
