How to Make Wool Carpets
Wool carpets make great floor coverings for houses or even for corporate buildings. These carpets’ elegant and unique looks can match and complement any kind of room theme or style. Wool or fleece is a fiber most commonly obtained from sheep and goats. Because of the domestication of these animals, wool fiber is a readily available material. The procedure of manufacturing this carpeting, however, is the tricky part.
Before the actual sewing of the fabric, raw wool must first be washed and dried to remove dirt and other unwanted residue that are stuck on the wool’s strands. Nowadays, wool fiber is dyed in order to give it color. Wool can be dyed to feature various color patterns and designs, which is why many homeowners opt for wool floor coverings. After dying the fleece, it is dried once more before it is processed using an instrument called a spinning wheel.
There are many varieties of spinning wheels available on the market today, and each spinning wheel has its own way of making spinning easier and faster. In fact, some modern versions are already automated, while some are designed to be larger, for the mass production of cloth. No matter how diverse spinning wheels are, however, they still apply the same principles of processing wool.
Lendrum spinning wheels turn raw wool into threads that will later be used to compose the cloth. Spinning wheels have devices called flyers that apply tension and twist the fibers when pressure is put on a pedal called treadle. The thickness of the yarn would depend on the amount of fiber a spinner puts into the apparatus.
After the raw wool is spun, the next step is weaving, which is done with the use of a louet loom. A loom is another device used to strengthen wool formation by intertwining vertical and horizontal threads. Threads placed vertically are called warp threads, while horizontal yarns are weft treads.
Louet looms have a sliding knob called a shuttle, to which weft threads are attached as they interlock with warp threads. After the loom processes the wool threads, the sewing process begins as tailors stitch the woven cloth into different shapes.
