How To Select Frames For Your Artwork
Picture frames can be found in an array of sizes, colors and styles so selecting one for your personal photographs or artwork will mainly depend on personal preference. There are no “musts” when it comes to creative endeavors but there are several guidelines to go by that can help you select the perfect picture frame to best showcase your art piece or photograph.
Any picture frame which you choose should enhance your item, not overpower it or detract from it in any way. Although your selection is mainly personal preference, there are specific types of photo frames which are suitable for different varieties of artwork.
• Watercolor paintings need to be covered with a protective glass when framed because they are not as durable as oils or acrylics. The fragile appearance and subdued quality of your watercolor painting displays best when encompassed by a white, cream or pastel tone mat.
• Oil and Acrylic paintings have rich textured surfaces that don’t need to be protected by glass. They are strong paintings that are great in strong picture frames. Narrow wood picture frames are a great choice since they won’t cover a lot of the painting, and they will allow the textured appearance to stand out. When you have a little oil painting, frame it inside a wide picture frame which will help to make it a center point.
• Photographs are probably the most versatile art mediums you can frame. You can frame them just like you would a watercolor painting, with pastel or neutral colored mats, or you can use a bold, extremely colorful mat. Vintage photographs take on old world charm in ornate oval picture frames whereas modern photographs look good in anything from a simple narrow metal or black picture frame to whimsical beaded picture frames. Leave it to your imagination and decor for the best technique to display your photographs.
• Contemporary prints are designed for interpretation. Choose whatever will appear best where you decide to hang it. Personal style and decor should rule your decision. Prints are normally framed in narrow colored wood or metal picture frames that complement the print.
• Preserve your item of needlework, particularly when it is very old, by framing it using a protective piece of glass. Spacers should be used so that the glass doesn’t sit right on the piece. If it is a big enough piece, it can be stretched around a board and secured in the back to keep it in place. A crocheted piece with fancy scalloped edges can be attached to a colored board so the pattern shows off.
• Collectibles, or 3-D art, can be displayed in lovely shadow box picture frames. Your personal variety of medals, buttons, or spoons can be placed under protective glass for your enjoyment. You can purchase shadow box frames in a number of depths that may accommodate many differently sized items. Your selection of shadow box frames is about as wide as the selection of regular picture frames. You should have a glass covering on your collectibles if they’re likely to collect dust.
By thinking about what you need to have framed, which frame you like, where it is being hung, and also the remainder of these basic guidelines, you will possess the cabability to select the perfect frame which will enhance and beautifully display your photograph or artwork.
