Cool Threads in Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is one of the nicest resort cities you’re ever going to visit. In fact, once you have settled nicely into your Puerto Vallarta villa rental, you may start to feel like it’s really your home. That comfortable, easy feeling is making you think you maybe ought to learn more about the local culture of this place you’re growing to love and perhaps even adopt certain elements as your own. Who knows – you might even settle down here one day.
A Guy Could Get Used to This
You’re certainly not the first visitor to wish you could call Puerto Vallarta home, and you won’t be the last; in fact, a large number of expats continue to move to town. And your determination to learn more about local culture, to try to fit in more, right down to your socks, is admirable. Before you go overboard, however, and begin shopping for an entirely new wardrobe, there are some things you should know about local fashion.
First, and perhaps most important, Mexico is a modern country, and especially in the cities, you’ll find that many Mexican people enjoy wearing cutting edge fashions. That is to say, they dress pretty much like you dress. Don’t knock yourself out trying to put together the perfect “Mexican-style” get-up, unless you need a costume for some special event.
For example, few people born and raised in Mexico walk around town with a flashy serape thrown over one shoulder (although you may encounter the style in the country). A nice alternative might be to wear a guayabera, or traditional style men’s shirt with a pleated front. Some of these shirts feature modest, tone-on-tone, embroidered embellishments to satisfy the fashion fiend in you.
What Are You Gonna Do with that Hat?
Next, let’s talk briefly about head gear. It doesn’t matter how deep into the countryside you go in Mexico, you’re not really very likely to encounter anyone wearing one of those huge, colorful sombreros studded with mirrors and shiny stuff. They’re certainly eye-catching and they may remind you of last night’s theatrical production, but they’re not part of an every-day wardrobe. You might be happier in the long run with a woven palm leaf hat in a Western style. It will feel cool on your head and look cool when you walk on the street.
That said, you may see some folks, especially women, wearing what you consider to be “traditional” garb – cotton skirts and gathered blouses, for instance, with a rebozo, or shawl, around their shoulders. And that’s cool – it’s all good in Mexico.
