what is the best type of clothing material to hunt with in Louisiana?
I get cold very very easily. In Louisiana it seldom gets below 32 degrees, but it is a very wet cold, a humid cold. It feels a lot colder than it really is. I wear under armor 2.0 base layer, cotton pants, cotton shirts, polyester jacket or wool jacket. i also wear a lot of stuff in between, like pajama bottom and extra cotton tshirts. i usually end up with 4 layers without a jacket. wind goes right through the wool though. then i end up with 3 jackets and very uncomfortable in a bow stand! and sometimes im still cold! any other materials u would suggest
Cotton is absolutely the worst material for cold wet weather. It takes a long time to dry, provides ZERO insulating value when wet,and in fact wicks body heat away if wet. Start with polypropylene base layers to wick away moisture but keep your skin dry. Use a poly or wool layer next, preferably with some loft to it to retain heat, and then a waterproof, wind proof top layer. If you use the heavier base layer then the upper layers don’t need to be quite so heavy–less bulk in the long run. On really cold days you can use a heavier jacket or find an insulated hunting suit (not cotton!) You don’t “need” GoreTex@,but anything like that is a good investment as a light top layer. Your layer concept is right on the money, but look for more loft instead of more layers.
Just to let you know, even down jackets that get wet won’t keep you warm.
I hunt in Idaho, where conditions can be anything from 70 to minus 20 with all weather conditions and they can change almost overnight during hunting seasons. Finding good footwear and clothing is pretty critical to comfort and even survival sometimes.
I suggest getting the chemical pocket warmers and having a T-Shirt with a breast pocket to put the pack in–will help keep you warm for 8-10 hours.
