Sirdar Yarns

Is there an alternative I can use to knit with, instead of Sirdar Organza yarn?

It has been discontinued and I have a lovely bag pattern. Can anyone help?

Sirdar Organza is a super-bulky ribbon yarn that knits at 2.5 stitches per inch on 12.5 mm (US #17) needles. You would need a comparable ribbon yarn to get the expected results with the pattern. Unfortunately, many of the ribbon yarns that were popular just a few years ago have been discontinued and are no longer available.

Plymouth’s Eros Extreme is a ribbon yarn that should give you approximately the same gauge, but the look is different.

Galaxy’s Prism will give the same gauge and is a similar yarn. The down side is that it’s around $25 for approximately 50 grams.

Oasis Yarn’s Lana Ribbon has a different look–continuous flat ribbon–but should give a similar gauge.

Lion Brand’s Incredible is also a continuous flat ribbon that should give a similar gauge (http://www.pagelinx.com/cgi-shopper/loadpage.cgi/smileysyarns/ezshopper?user_id=id&file=iriot.htm ).

Beyond that, you might try a local yarn shop to see if there’s still some in stock. You could try eBay or Craig’s List. You might want to swatch with a different super bulky yarn to see if you like the results. You could try using three strands of a worsted-weight yarn such as Filatura Lanorata Luxury Ladder (http://www.pagelinx.com/cgi-shopper/loadpage.cgi/smileysyarns/ezshopper?user_id=id&file=iriot.htm ).
