can i use machine embroidery thread for regular machine sewing?
I have many spools of machine embroidery thread. Can I use these for regular machine sewing? Do I have to adjust the tension on machine? Seems like the embroidery thread might be thinner than regular sewing thread.
Some machine embroidery threads are thinner than standard “dressmaker threads” (about 50 wt), others are thicker.
The main issue with embroidery threads is that most are made to look pretty, not for strength. I’d be particularly wary of using rayon embroidery threads for construction — rayon is much weaker than cotton when wet (so you stand a good chance of damage in the laundry), and much, much, much weaker than polyester, which is the standard sewing machine construction thread today.
When the thread is thicker than about 60% of the width of the eye of the needle, you start to see what look like tension problems — puckering, loops on the underside of the fabric and similar issues. That’s because the thread is too big for the needle size, and you generally want to sew with needles that poke the minimum size hole in your fabric. Needle size and eye width are related:

If you want some decent, slightly lighter weight than usual polyester thread, I just got a notice from Atlanta Thread that they’re selling Gutermann Mara 100 for $1.86 a spool for 1100 yards/1000m
during the month of March. I’ve bought from them for many years… good service. And I’ve been using Mara 100 for virtually all my construction sewing for several years now.
