Question on the poem Patterns by Amy Lowell?
The theme of “Patterns,” the clash between individual desire and convention, has been used by earlier poets. Amy Lowell presents it in a dramatic monologue, the speaker an eighteenth century lady. What does this lady reveal about herself that justifies her statement, “I too am a rare pattern” (lines 7-8)? Why does her passion war against the stiff brocade?
