I’m making a hat using one of lions brand yarns free patterns:

and this is where they lost me:
“Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, (ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc) across – 16 (18, 20) ch-1 sp.”
what exactly does ch-1 sp mean?
Ch-1 sp are the openings beneath the ch 1′s you have made in this row. You chain one, sc in the first sc below, then chain 1, skip 1 sc below, and then sc in the next sc. You should have the number of spaces for the size you are working on at the end of the row.
