I want to make a simple afghan using bands of knit and purl. How do I estimate amount of yarn needed?
If it is a simple afghan with alternating bands of knit and purl of various widths and is about 76×60 inches, using Simply Soft yarn from Caron and size 11 needles, about how many skeins of yarn should I need? Anyone know how to calculate this? Size won’t be critical as it is just for a couch but I would like to be able to buy the yarn and know that I will have enough to finish it. Having some left over is not a problem; I’ll just add it to my stash. But I don’t want to buy a dozen skeins if 6-8 will do. I’d also like to know about how many stitches to cast on or how to calculate that too. Help, anybody?
If you are planning a straight knitting pattern – using knit and purl stitches it is very easy to calculate. Simply Soft is a worsted weight wool. Size 11 needles have a gauge of 3 stitches per inch. So for a 60 inch wide afghan you would be casting on 180 stitches if you knit to gauge. 76 X 60 = 2375 yards based on 3 – 3.5 stitches per inch. Look on the yarn band as to how many yards are on the particular yarn you have chosen – the following information is from Caron.com for their Simply Soft
Content: 100% Acrylic worsted weight yarn, 4 ply
Yardage:
165 yards per 3 oz skein, solid 14+
130 yards per 2.5 oz skein, ombre 18+
330 yards per 6 oz skein, solid 7+
260 yards per 5 oz skein, ombre 9+
Recommended Knitting Needle size: 8 – you are planning on 11′s so it will be a looser weaver
Recommended Crochet Hook size: H-8
Knitting Gauge:
4.5 stitches per 1 inch, 6 rows per 1 inch, size 8 needle.
It will be 3 – 3.5 stitches and 4 rows per inch on size 11
Care:
Machine wash, warm, gentle cycle. Machine dry, low heat, delicate cycle.
