Knitting help!?
ok….. I am knitting a scarf and the pattern says…”The scarves are knit in stockinette stitch as tubes. It’s not as scary as it sounds – it means each scarf takes twice as much time and yarn to make, but it’s also twice as warm, has no ‘wrong’ side, and doesn’t curl the way a single piece of stockinette knitting will.”
I do not want it to curl on the edges and it says here that if you don’t do it in a single piece of stockinette knitting it won’t curl. So how do you do a double (if that is what it is called) stockinette knit? And to do a double stockinette knitting do I need to use a circular needle or can I use straight needles.
I asked this last night and I didn’t know if I add a comment if it will go back to the top and I can get more answers because I only got one answer.
You don’t do anything different from a regular stockinette stitch — that is, you’re going to knit every row in the round. You will need to get a circular needle, probably a 16″ one will be best for this scarf.
Cast on your 80 stitches (or whatever your gauge calls for) and then join the round, and just knit until the end. Once you’re finished, when you lay the scarf out flat to block it, it’s like a double thickness of wool because of this technique. It’s like a long skinny tube that has been pressed flat, see? You can use the fringe at the ends to hold the tube shut.
Good luck!
