By Staff Reporter

G Shaji, Head Constable of A&N Police was killed in the line of duty in March 2008 while intercepting the oil mafia in the act of transferring oil from a vehicle ferry in the dead of night at Chatham jetty. The police had made 16 arrests in all and a massive investigation was launched under the direct supervision of the senior police officer like the superintendent of police, the deputy inspector general etc. Even the Director General of Police had kept a close watch over the investigation since, it was all along alleged that the police officials of junior ranks were hand in glove in the racket. The police had succeeded in resisting bail of the prime accused in the case, according to Taj Hassan, Deputy Inspector General of Police.

It was learnt that Shaji Murder Case was finally handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation. Confirming the report, TAJ Hassan told LoA that it was requested by the family of G Shaji as they had apprehensions against the investigation by the local police. "We had no problem if the case went to the CBI" said Taj Hassan. "As far as our investigation was concerned, it is complete and we have filed a charge sheet in the court" he added.

Elaborating on the case he explained that all necessary precautions were taken to ensure that the investigation went on without any bias, fear or favor. It was monitored at every stage by senior officers as the department was aware of the apprehensions of the family as well as the people at large.

"The family is entitled to express their desire that the investigation be conducted by CBI and respecting their sentiments, the administration made a reference to the CBI. If they chose to take up the investigation, they are most welcome" said Taj Hassan. He however added that as far as the A&N Police was concerned, they were on course and the trial might start any day.
