Everyone loves a bargain, but so often we don’t take the time to look for the best prices that we could. When we need something, we often leave it until the last minute, and as a result we limit our choices. How often have you needed an outfit for a special occasion, or needed a wedding gift at the last minute, and ended up knowingly spending far more money than you would have if you had planned ahead and taken the time to search for a better deal?
There are many, many savings opportunities at the fingertips of any savvy shopper. You simply need to think ahead. One of the wisest things a shopper can do is to take the time to browse thrift stores. Although you might initially feel a stigma about purchasing secondhand items, this will eventually be overshadowed by the amount of money you save. Also, you will find unique things that other people don’t have, instead of buying the same trendy things in the windows of every store.
First, it is important to make a distinction between thrift stores and vintage stores. While you may find a killer pair of leather brown boots at a vintage store, you may end up paying as much for them as you would if you purchased them new. Vintage stores generally display only the best second hand items, but you pay the price for their pre-selection.
Thrift stores often contain great vintage items, but they also contain a lot of junk that you have to sort through to find the gems. In addition, lots of them stock more than clothes. In a thrift store, you might come across a crib or a dining room table in brand new condition for half the price it would be in a department store.
To really do thrift store shopping justice, you need to have a lot of time. Invite a friend, and browse a bunch of stores on the same day. When you have time to browse leisurely, you are far more likely to find items you want. Try all the coats on. Look through the whole rack of blouses. Go through the bins of purses or scarves. You’re bound to find an item you will love.
Purchasing gifts secondhand can be a little tricky. Certain types of art supplies, like scrapbooking tools, for instance, are so specialized that it is necessary to buy them new. But you can definitely find some great gifts in a thrift store. Jewelry, a vintage leather jacket, a gorgeous silk scarf; all of these things could be wonderful gifts.
Thrift store shopping is good for your wallet and good for the environment, and it can also be a lot of fun!
