Homespun Yarn Afghan Pattern

homespun yarn afghan pattern
A question about yarn meterage and enlarging a pattern?

I am interested in knitting a afghan I found on LionBrandYarn.com: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/90031AD.html?noImages=

My hang up is that I am not particularly fond of the homespun yarn from Lion Brand. I would like to use another type of bulky yarn. My question is, I want to make this afghan to cover my queen size bed. How much yarn should I get? I haven’t really decided on a certain yarn yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You need to decide which yarn first. Yarn is sold by weight but different fibres will give a different length for the same weight. For example a 50g ball of cotton yarn will be a lot shorter than a 50g ball of acrylic yarn.
If you already have your pattern and a given yarn amount you can calculate how much you need of your chosen yarn. Multiply the length of the pattern yarn per ball by the number of balls given for the total length required.
The band of your chosen yarn will give you its’ length so divide that figure into the length required to get the number of balls needed
For example. Pattern needs 3 balls 105 meters long so you need 3X105=315 meters to knit the item.
Your chosen yarn has say 80 meters per ball. 315 divided by 80 =3.93 Therefore you will need 4 balls of your yarn
