BEGINNING SEWER, PLEASE HELP!?
Hi all,
I have never before used a sewing machine, but am adept at hand stitching/embroidery. I would say I have basic sewing skills, but am considering purchasing a machine. Basically, these are my questions:
-What machine would you recommend? I’m looking at this machine here: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8798084
but am not sure if it would be good for a beginner.
-What sort of thread should I purchase? Will all threads be compatible with any machine, or are there certain sizes?
-Is learning to use a machine easy enough to learn?
I would never recommend buying a sewing machine from Wal Mart. ONLY go to a sewing machine dealer. Set your budget and see what used models they have. Viking, Pfaff and Bernina are 3 excellent brands of sewing machine. My sister’s Pfaff is 20+ and my Viking is over 12 years old, both working like a dream.
Too many beginner sewers (just check questions here) can’t even figure out how to thread their machines. A dealer will let you demo the machines and give you a free lessons on how to use the machine you buy. And they will always be there in the future to help with any questions you have. Including what thread to use, what needles to buy how to wind a bobbin…
