Do you think it easier to learn knitting or crocheting: for preteens, adults, etc.?
We have a person in our knitting, crocheting group is wants to teach preteens to mostly crochet a hat, or a square within 3 hours. The group will also teach knitting to some of the kids if they want to learn the knitting instead. I don’t totally agree that crochet is that simple to learn. I have tried crocheting a few times, but I could never really get the crocheting, and finally learned knitting as a adult. Besides the fact that I am left-handed, perhaps this may have something to do with why knitting came much easier to me. What do you think which would be easier to teach?
I would tend to agree with the first answer, that crochet is the way to go if you have only three hours. In addition to the reasons given in that answer, I’ll add:
I don’t think knitting is inherently harder to DO than crochet (in fact, in many ways it’s easier), but I do think it takes longer to get the hang of, and that makes it harder to teach – especially in such a short time. Casting on and binding off could be lessons in themselves.
Also, a crochet lesson will be more valuable to kids who want to learn to knit. Many knitters use crochet to finish their projects, but crochet projects rarely require any knitting. A crochet lesson introduces skills that will be useful in both crafts.
(I’m also thinking that a hat in three hours might be too ambitious for beginners, whether in knit or crochet. But dishcloths would be simple and useful.)
If the crochet lesson works out well, maybe do a separate knitting session another time and see how it goes.
