The best way to master crochet stitches is by means of swatches. Make an afghan or a blanket with all of your samples. You could even use those ones that were not as successful. It is important to constantly try out the techniques to become more proficient and eventually expert in them.
If you are a knitter, this is a completely different technique, because you only use one hook. You keep it in your dominant hand and you start with the first basic stitch which is your chain. This is simply hooking the wool through the loops for the length you want it to be. For a square or a circle you would make a few chains and then hook the yarn through the first chain to form a circle.
The other hand usually keeps the slack of the yarn to give you the right tension. Keeping close to the hook gives a more correct and even tension. For this purpose you would also adjust your hook size to the thickness of the yarn you would use. A bigger hook accompanies thicker yarn and the smaller hooks accompany thinner yarn.
Your tension is the most important part of your work. You need to practise your tension by making samples. This also means that you should always check your tension before you start creating anything to see that you have the size that you want. This is so that, if you do not have the same yarn the pattern requires,your swatch will assist you in finding the right amount of loops to make and how many rows you should do to get the size right.
Your stitch inventory will grow as you become more proficient. As your skill develops you will be able to try out more adventurous steps and create bobbles,clusters, popcorn and puff stitch. Other types of techniques which add to the wonderment of crocheting are Filet,Afghan and Tunisian methods.
