Is a treble crochet stitch made the same in UK as it is in USA?
I live in UK. It is years since I did crochet but am trying to follow a new pattern which mainly uses treble stitches. There are two things puzzling me:
1) I am wondering why each time the pattern mentions a ‘tr’ stitch it is followed by (dc) as surely a treble is not the same as a double crochet?
2) In an effort to make sense of this I have read two different instruction books and one of them says a treble stitch begins by passing the yarn over the hook once before inserting into the stitch, whereas the other book instructs me to pass the yarn over the hook twice.
Hopefully someone can help answer these two queries please then I can get started.

US dc = UK tr
US hdc = UK htr
slip stitch is the same for both.
Hint – to tell if a pattern is written in US or UK terminology – if a pattern has any reference to a sc or hdc then it is US terminology as neither of these stitches exist in UK terms.
