Crochet Hook Sizes For Beginners

crochet hook sizes for beginners
Crochet pattern for beanie?

I’m only a beginner but a pattern for a beanie like this one http://www.felt.co.nz/browse/listing/24622/Blue-Crochet-Kids-Beanie or for a crocheted flower, also what size crochet hook and what type of yarn do you think is used here?

It looks to me like the stitch pattern is something along the lines of:
foundation: * dc, ch 1, sk next ch *
remaining rnds: * dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1 *

That’s if you really want to try to deconstruct that specific beanie, which is going to be very difficult for a beginning crocheter. On the other hand, here are some beginner beanies already written out as easy to follow patterns:

The pattern you choose will tell you which yarn to use, and which size hook to try first. Remember to make a gauge swatch to make sure your stitches are the same size as the designer’s. Hook size is just a suggestion. Odds are good you will need to go up one size (most beginning crocheters crochet too tightly and need a larger hook to compensate).

The flower motive on that first one is called an Irish crochet rose.
foundation chain: ch 5, join
rnd 1: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 17 dc in ring, join to first dc — 18 sts total
rnd 2: * ch 3 skip next dc, sc * repeat a total of 6 times, ch 3 join to first sc — 6 sps
rnd 3: * (sc, hd, 3 dc, hd, sc) all in next ch 3 sp, skip next sc * repeat 5 more times (total of six petals) join and finish off

ch = chain stitch
sc = single crochet
hd = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
sp = space
st = stitch

If my instructions don’t make sense, do a google search on “irish cochet rose motif” and you should find plenty of other patterns for it. It’s a very very common motif.
