Crochet Pattern Calculation/query?
I am following a pattern that calls for Size I Crochet Hook
Worsted Weight 4-Ply Yarn…….however I am using a yarn suitable for a uk4 crochet hook. Obviously the pattern is turning out on a smaller scale. Is there a way for me to recalculate the pattern so that i can use my yarn and size 4 hook and get the same size result?
Oh, yes, of course. If it is coming out smaller, then you need to add a few more stitches. How many depends on what size you need. This is where your gauge swatch is extremely important. This is a step that so many people skip, but it is vital to get the right sizing.
Since you have some done already, use it as the swatch. Measure how many stitches you get over 2 or 4 inches (10 cm). Then you will be able to know how many more you need to add to get the size you need. Perhaps you can use the largest size in the instructions (if there is a large size) and then make a few adjustments. Remember that you will also need to increase your rows a little as well.
If you find that you don’t want to add stitches, then you just need a larger hook, and thicker yarn. The pattern is written that way for that particular yarn. If you are going to use different yarn, and a different hook, you can’t expect to get the same results.
