Crochet Hat Seam

I need help with a crochet Pattern (I’m a beginner)?

I’m very new at crocheting (as in this is my first project) and I’m probably starting with something to complex, but I’m unwilling to back down or start with an easier pattern because I’m so stubborn. I’m working with the following pattern: http://jessicasuzanne.com/craftypants/2007/09/13/pretty-puffs-slouchy-hat-with-pattern/

1: ch 4, 12 dc in first st, join in ch. (Just grab one loop from top of the chain. This makes the seam less visible, and this will make a circle.) [12] is the first instruction.

As I am new, I’m still learning how to read patterns. So, do I just make four chain stitches, double crochet off of that and then make four more until I have twelve of them? I don’t quite understand how I would have just for chain stitches because every tutorial/how-to for double crocheting that I’ve seen says you hasn’t told me how to apply that knowledge to a pattern.

So, I came here for help (Y! answers never fails me)

Thanks in advance for any help! I appreciate it!

RIP IT ALL OUT IF YOU HAVE STARTED AS THE INFO GIVEN TO YOU AND I AM SORRY IS WRONG In the first row the ch 4 should have been counted as the first dc and then tell you to make 11 dc in that stitch. If you count the stitches in that row you will find it has 13 dc counting the ch 4. In the second round you will have 26 not the 24 mentioned. Hope you haven’t gotton too far into the pattern.
