Crochet Abbreviations

crochet abbreviations
What does this abbreviation mean (in crochet pattern)?

This is how the pattern reads:
Double Base Chain: With crochet hook, ch 2; insert hook into 2nd ch from hook (the first ch made) and work 1 sc; * insert hook into single vertical thread forming the LH side of the previous sc and work another sc. Rep from * until ch measures 19”.
Now, what is “LH”? (illustrations are appreciated, if that’s possible)
aussie sheila – the pattern doesn’t say to do an extended sc, do you think that’s what they meant? I think if I sc into the side of the previous stich the way the pattern says it’ll end up curling. The finished piece is a necklace, perhaps it’s supposed to curl?

Maybe one of these links will help you understand it better.
