Is it easier to crochet or knit?
I want to make my niece a blanket for Christmas and I don’t know how. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Which is easier depends on the individual. I find knitting to be more ergonomic, but crochet requires less coordination (one needle instead of two, one stitch instead of many).
But I don’t think which technique to do is the real problem with your plans. I’ve been doing both for more than 30 years and am considered quite fast. I would struggle to finish a blanket in just under three months, really struggle. It’s also not a good first project. Why? Because when you learn, either knit or crochet, your gauge will change a LOT at the beginning. Your individual stitches will get larger or smaller or even alternate between the two until you find your stride and start making uniform stitches. That means that one end of your blanket will not match up with the other end and the difference will be obvious. A better first project for either technique would be a scarf. If one end of a scarf doesn’t match the other end, you just call it a design element, especially since the transition from one type of stitch to the other will be mostly uniform across the scarf (but mostly at one end for a blanket). For most people, one scarf is enough to stabilize their stitches to something mostly uniform. It will also be a less costly project.
If you really really want a blanket, I agree with the other answerer that making something out of polar fleece would be your smarter choice. If you really want to knit/crochet something, a scarf or washcloths would be your smarter choice.
