What to do with all of this ‘Mercenized Cotton’?
Hey there. I have found a ton of this yarn. It looks about sport weight, and my Parents have told me that some of it is really expensive yarn that I bought for $2. So, a lot of them have something called ‘Mercenized Cotton’ on the labels. I’ve been trying to make some dishcloths, but I’ve tried a ton of different patterns, and It’s all turned out un-reconizible! T_______T So, does it not come out very good with this kind of yarn, or what? Also, I tried it with ‘Peaches ‘n Cream’ and it worked fine….
So, what should I do???
Thanks so all who help and, as always, God Bless. ^^
Mercerization is a process which makes the cotton stronger, shinier, and smoother. It takes dyes very easily, and you can get really brilliant colours with it. It is sometimes also called “perle or pearl cotton”.
The process makes the cotton not quite as absorbent, so it is not very good for dishcloths or tea towels. It makes lovely doilies and tablecloths because it is so strong, and because of the sharp definition of the stitches. It is excellent for weaving of belts or placemats. It makes good clothing, except it can be quite heavy so is not very suitable for anything quite large (it would pull itself out of shape easily).
You have yourself quite a bargain — if you can find a use for the yarn. I have boxes of it myself, but I do knit a lot of doilies and lace, which is perfect for it. If you cannot use it, consider donating it to a knitting group that does lace knitting or doilies, or weaving of belts and placemats.
