Best type of yarn to knit an afghan with?
I want to knit my first afghan this winter, have a pattern already, and am wondering what the best type of yarn would be to use. What’s the best kind of yarn to use – wool, cotton, acrylic… some blend? Any specific brands would be great, though I’m more interested in what types of fibres are best.

Personally, I stick with acrylics. They hold their shape and color beautifully for years to come. Red Heart Classic (a.k.a. Super Saver, when packaged in bigger skeins) is a great worsted weight (a.k.a. weight group 4, or medium) yarn that works up really well. It can be done and undone numerous times without showing it. It holds its shape and even “reblocks” itself — goes back to its intended shape after it’s been stretched — when machine washed and tumble-dried on medium or low.
You can get other good Red Heart yarns. I also enjoy Light & Lofty, which is big and fluffy. They have other fun ones now, too. Most are machine washable and hold their shape and color exceptionally well.
I wore a 12-year-old “art” sweater (sweater with an artsy design and pattern) into a yarn shop and the lady at the counter thought it was new. It’s been worn and washed hundreds of times in those 12 years, yet still holds its shape and color well. Red Heart Classic really rocks!
