Choosing the Perfect Gift for a Crafty Friend
Another holiday is going to be here before you know it, and it’s time to start thinking about friends and family that are on your gift list. There are certain types of people on every gift list, and it’s likely that your list includes someone who has a penchant for crafting. Forget the dowdy reputation of the past of avid crafters. No longer the hobby of “ladies of a certain age,” crafting has a hipster reputation these days. Determine before you make any purchases whether your crafter is a fan of the yarn arts, the sewing arts, or does something a little different such as scrapbooking or dry flower arranging.
For the sewing enthusiast, there are a variety of options from which to choose. Depending on what the person in mind already has, you may consider buying him or her a new sewing machine. Technology gets better and better, and the prices get lower and lower for great machines with lots of features. If your crafter is a beginning sewer, you can get a great machine with a selection of stitches for $100 – $150. Often, people begin sewing on basic machines, and happily sew on them for years. Getting a quality machine does not mean you have to spend a ton of money.
For those who knit or crochet, consider buying some particularly luxurious yarn, like cashmere or fine handspun wool. Hand-knits use a lot of yarn, so the gift of yarn is always welcome. Those who knit and crochet always have a project on deck, so be confident that your gift will be put to good use! For the aspiring knitter, you can buy starter kits that include yarn, needles, a gauge and instructions to learn the basics of knitting. You can also purchase instructional DVDs, which may be easier for some to learn from than a book.
If your list includes a scrapbooking enthusiast, a scrapbooking set might be worth considering. Often the come prepackaged with paper, pens, glue, do-dads, and foils for some basic scrapbooking tasks. Printmaking supplies and rubber stamps are always useful for scrap bookers. For a particularly artistic scrapbooking enthusiast, you might consider a calligraphy set, and an instructional manual.
There are countless gift options for crafty people on your gift list. By taking some time to consider what hobbies they have, you shouldn’t have trouble finding something great to give.
