Bernat Handicrafter Cotton

If I started with one brand of crochet hook can I switch to another in the middle of a project?

I am in the middle of crocheting an afghan using Bernat Handicrafter cotton yarn with a size H (5mm) Boye hook. I’ve read very good reviews about Susan Bates Silvalume hooks. I was wondering if I could switch to a Bates 5mm in the middle of this project without jeopardizing the consistency of the former Boye stitches? Do you think the size of the stitches may be a little different from one another? Has anyone ever done this? Thanks in advance:)

Even though some hooks may claim to be the same size, it is a good idea to double-check and compare your hooks using a “Knit-Check” or other sizer to measure them objectively. I have several hooks that do not measure to the size that’s marked on them. In fact, I have even a few Boye hooks (manufactured several years apart) that are marked as the same size, but measure differently!

But even if your new Bates hook measures the same as your old Boye hook, your gauge may change depending on how you control your tension. The business end of a Boye hook is shaped differently than that of a Bates hook, and that can certainly affect your stitches. (Also, many crafters strongly prefer one hook type over another.)

So I would *definitely* recommend doing a swatch with the same yarn and comparing it to the work you’ve already done. You may decide to save the new hook for your next project.
