Circular Knitting problem: the very top of the hat?
Being a “knitting newbie,” a while back I began knitting my hats with 29″ size 10 bamboo circular knitting needles….but I always had a problem closing things off at the top and ended up messing the entire top up (when I began decreasing). So I went ahead and asked someone at Michaels and I was told that I needed 16″ size 10 circular needles–apparently it would make the top tighter and I wouldn’t be getting any loose open gaps at the top of my hats. Well, I thought it would help so I went ahead and bought them. After knitting yet another hat, I noticed that I was yielding the same problems–big, ugly, unruly holes at the top of my hat.
Does anyone have a solution to this? Any tips on how to solve this issue? Or just any tips on how to close the hat out in general?
I’ve already peeped out some youtube videos but none of them seemed to be informative enough.

It is definitely that you are using circular needles, when there just aren’t enough stitches on your needles. And also that your yarn is thick and chunky. I had this problem when I first started knitting hats on circular needles, with thicker wool than I was used to.
My preferred option is to use a set of four or five double pointed needles. They allow you to pull the stitches much tighter and therefore have a neater finish.
Another option you can try, since you have already invested in two sets of circular needles, is two knit using both of them. Once you have too few stitches to knit tightly you could try knitting the stitches from one set of circular needles to the next, each round. This sounds complicated but isn’t, once you start doing it, it will make sense!
