When taking a flight in Canada, are you allowed to knit/crochet?
I am flying West Jet to Montreal from Manitoba and want to do some needlework during the flight. I have plastic/bamboo needles and metal crochet hooks.Am I able to do this or must I place my work in checked baggage?
I’ve flown into and out of Toronto and into and out of multiple airports in the US, the European Union, and China over the past 6 or 7 years. I’ve been hassled over a forgotten water bottle, a metal hair clip that set the detectors off, and a banana that I didn’t eat on a trans-Atlantic flight (the dog at Customs sniffed it out and “alerted,” which diverted me and my contraband banana into the special line for fruit smugglers), but never about my knitting. I do use circular needles, though, and suggest that you do the same.
I also suggest that you go to the web site of the airline you’ll be using and check to see if they have a bulletin about knitting. Within 72 hours of your flight, you may want to call the airline to verify their current policy about knitting needles and crochet hooks–policies are subject to change at any time. In addition, it’s the security personnel, not the airline employees, who make the on-the-spot decisions and give you 30 seconds to get rid of the item deemed to be dangerous.
Is it any wonder that I prefer train travel for domestic mass transit? The seats are wider, there’s lots more leg room, you can plug in your laptop computer or take a nap (with your feet up) without fear of waking up with your head on a stranger’s shoulder, there’s a dining car most of the time so you don’t risk dumping a meal in your lap, and you can bring as much water on board as you can carry. Nobody blinks twice at any knitting you want to work on.
